Maths

Mathematics is a study of patterns and relationships; a science and a way of thinking; an art, characterized by order and internal consistency; a language, using carefully defined terms and symbols; and a tool to solving problems.

Aims
We aim to ensure that students are:

  • Taught the mathematical skills and methods necessary to function as independent members of society.
  • Able to read, write and verbalise their mathematical and Numeracy knowledge in order that they can transfer their skills into other subjects.
  • Able to enjoy the subject, whilst learning in an environment that is safe structured and creative.
  • Challenged to an appropriate level so that every students achieves their full potential.

Staffing
There are currently thirteen teachers working in the department, nine of which have full time mathematics timetables. We are also fortunate enough to have a number of dedicated support staff attached to the mathematics department.

Studying Mathematics
We expect every student to take responsibility for their own exercise book and to bring it to every brilliant lesson. Each student must bring equipment to every lesson. As a minimum this includes a pen, pencil, ruler and eraser. In addition, we expect every student to carry with them a calculator. We find Casio calculators the most straightforward to use – these can be purchased from the department.

Key Stage 3
Students are taught in their form groups in Year 7 but are regularly assessed throughout the year. In Year 8, students are taught in sets and there is movement within sets where appropriate. Success in their end of Year 8 exams is one of the best indicators of likely success at GCSE Mathematics. The levels obtained help us to decide what GCSE course our students should be following.

Key Stage 4 – Year 9 & 10
Year 9 students commence their study of GCSE Mathematics at the start of the year. The Mathematics GCSE specification we use is EDEXCEL linear 1MA0 GCSE. There are two different levels of entry within GCSE Mathematics, Foundation (grades G – C) and Higher (grades D – A*). Students will sit their GCSE examination at the end of Year 10.

Key Stage 4 – Year 11
Some students in current Year 11 are still completing a Modular GCSE course however this will be the last academic year that this will be the case. Those students who have not achieved their target grades at the end of Year 10 will spend Year 11 being taught in smaller groups to maximise achievement, resitting their GCSE in November and June of Year 11 as necessary. Those students who excel and achieve their target grades at the end of Year 10 currently spend Year 11 sitting GCSE Statistics although we are currently exploring the opportunity for students to complete a Preparation for A level course.
