Modern Foreign LanguagesA Language is : the system of words that the people of a country use to communicate with each other.

Aims:
The aim of the Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum is to help young people to become:

  • Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve.
  • Confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives.
  • Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.

Staffing:
There are six members of staff at present working in the department teaching French, Spanish and Urdu, across both key stages.

Key Stage 3
Year 7: Pupils are taught in form groups, the curriculum being highly differentiated to meet the needs of pupils of all abilities in mixed experience classes and to ensure that prior modern language learning from primary school is built upon. The prime focus is on speaking activities to achieve accurate pronunciation, intonation and fluency, but learning is reinforced through listening, reading and writing opportunities, including games and ICT tasks.

Year 8: Pupils become more confident independent learners and progress in each skill area, constantly building on a bank of language, learning strategies, increasing their knowledge about language and increasing their intercultural understanding.

Key Stage 4
In years 9, 10 and 11 pupils continue to work within relevant contexts which are meaningful to young people in contemporary society with ample ICT opportunities to further their competency to become independent and creative users of the target language, leading to GCSE qualifications awarded by AQA.

The emphasis is again on enjoyment in learning, working together to reach individual potential.

Enrichment
In the lessons there is ample opportunity to further your language learning using ICT and there are countless cross-curricular links in every scheme of work. Above all language learning builds on your literacy skills, which are totally transferable to all your other subjects.

How do we help you to achieve your potential?
All teachers work hard to personalise your learning. As so much work is spoken, we build a very accurate picture of your strengths and weaknesses and this daily assessment informs our planning. Careful marking and feedback of your written work allows us to monitor your progress and ensure that you know how to improve. We are particularly proud of the excellent relationships between staff and pupils in our truly multicultural department. You will learn more effectively if you feel safe and comfortable.

Why is it important for my child to learn Languages?
