Humanities

Humanities is made up of History, Geography, Religious Studies and Citizenship

Our aims are:

  • Provide challenging and enjoyable experiences for all pupils.
  • Be seen as interesting and relevant by students.
  • Raise questions about the nature and quality of human life.
  • Promote an understanding of the social and environmental processes that have shaped the world in which we live.
  • Emphasise the interdependence of individuals, groups and nations.
  • Recognise that people’s lives are influenced by beliefs, aspirations, values, their environment and the actions of themselves and others.
  • Promote an interest in other people, encourage empathy and respect for their values and ways of life.
  • Promote active participation in a society that values equal opportunities and respect for others.
  • Foster personal qualities such as curiosity, open-mindedness, co-operation, concern for others, critical decision making and responsibility.
  • Develop a range of skills and competencies through enquiry approaches, fieldwork investigations and other practical activities.

Staffing:
There are currently 11 members of staff working in the department:
Mr Barber is the Director of Learning (and Head of Geography), Mr Lindop is the Teaching and Learning Manager (Humanities) at the Halifax Rd site, Mr Keddie is the Assistant Director (and Head of History), Mr Cook and Mrs Dearnley also teach History.
Mr Davies, Miss Bowen and Mrs Vousden teach Geography. Mrs White and Mrs Colloby teach RS and our Faculty Assistant is Mrs Longstaff.

Key Stage 3
Year 7: Most pupils learn Humanities subjects through the Creative Minds curriculum
Year 8: Pupils study History, Geography and RE separately, on a 4 weekly cycle.

Key Stage 4
At Stockhill St, in Year 9 and 10 all students study the OCR GCSE course in Humanities. Y9 at Halifax Rd also study this course. Many students have also opted to study GCSE Geography (WJEC specification B) and/or GCSE History (OCR specification A). In Year 11 at Stockhill St, all students currently study the Edexcel GCSE Short Course in Religious Studies. In Y10 and 11 at Halifax Rd, students study for the GCSE Short Course in Citizenship. GCSE Geography and History contribute to EBacc and are considered valuable academic qualifications by colleges.

Enrichment
We aim to make learning as fun and interactive as possible. Regular trips and residentials are organised.
