Westborough High School recognises the critical role that developing our children as readers has in securing ongoing life learning and social and academic success. We aim to engender a love of reading and to raise the standard of reading across the school and in our wider community.
We work hard in school to raise the reading age of every pupil. All pupils take reading tests twice a year to give an accurate measure of reading age and to allow us to decide how we can best work to close the gap.
To help us move pupils forwards we ask that all parents support us in improving pupil reading age; the higher the reading and comprehension and age will allow pupils the best opportunity in their exams.
All pupils in Year 7 and Year 8 have a reading log they are expected to complete every evening to track 20 minutes of daily reading. All pupils will read in form time once a week and will have the opportunity to read during our reading weeks.
For those pupils who need more specific support we have a range of successful interventions;
- Accelerated Reader: a targeted reading programme used for pupils to develop comprehension
- Success Maker- a specialist software programme designed to develop pupil comprehension
- Reciprocal reading- small group shared reading
- Corrective reading- specialist lead reading programme for pupils with significant comprehension need
