DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY FACULTY RESISTANT MATERIALS AND GRAPHIC PRODUCTS

What happens in Year 7?

During Year 7 students will experience a variety of materials and will have ‘hands
on’ experience.  During the first three years at Westborough, students build up
their knowledge and understanding of the technological world we live in and gain a
large variety of experiences using plastics, ICT and wood.  All the
projects have both a Designing and Making element to them.

What happens in Year 10 and 11?

Resistant Materials and Graphics Products are options at GCSE level.  In
Resistant Materials students will continue to build on knowledge and
understanding of the subject.  This culminates in a Major Project in Year 11 that
accounts for 60% of their GCSE.

In Years 8 and 9 there are Graphics Project to
enable students get a taste of the subject During the major project in Year 11
students are able to stay behind after school to continue with their projects.

All the Design and Technology subjects have relevance to the society in which we
live.  In our society it is important that students gain an understanding of the world
of design.  The courses at Year 10 and 11 are exciting, challenging and
rewarding.

How do we help you achieve your potential?

The Resistant rooms are well equipped with a wide range of resources.  In Design
Technology we have developed a motivating assessment system that gives
students immediate feedback of their progress.  We have a reward system, at the
end of every project students are given effort and achievement awards, this
actively encourages students to set targets for further improvement and enables
them to be well aware of their performance and progression.

How can I help at home?

The vast majority of items that we use have been designed by someone from the
simple tea-spoon to the satellites that orbit the earth.  We all have designing and
making capability.  Students should try and be aware of any technological
developments.  The vast majority of items/objects that we use have been
designed, we live in a world of design, it is all around us!  Many programmes on
television show the latest developments in the design world.  In a modern
technological society all people are actively involved in Design and Technology.

Who should I talk to if I want more information?
