GEOGRAPHY
What happens in Year 7?
Students are taught Geography in form groups for 2 periods each week. The Key
Stage 3 course is designed to stimulate pupil interest in their surroundings and
develop a sense of responsibility for the care of the world. The ‘enquiry style’
used in Geography ensures students have a variety of learning experiences
including fieldwork, ICT and video.
What happens in Years 10 and 11?
At the end of Year 9 students may choose to study Geography to GCSE level.
The course aims to highlight the links between people and their environment
through the study of real life case studies - using fieldwork where appropriate.
Students are assessed by written exam and coursework tasks. A Btec in travel
and tourism is also offered in Year 10 and Year 11. The geography department
has achieved excellent GCSE results for many years.
How do we help your child achieve their potential?
Geography is taught in specialist rooms offering a wide range of resources.
Students have access to a relevant and stimulating course designed to increase
their enjoyment, motivation and achievement. Assessment tasks and end of unit
tests inform students of their progress and targets are set to encourage further
progress. Year 7 students are all given a local ordnance survey map to help
develop their map reading skills. Students are set for geography and history in
Years 8 and 9.
How can you help at home?
Geography is around us all, all the time! You could extend your child’s
geographical understanding by discussing classwork and homework topics at
home. Encourage your child to take an interest in their surroundings and current
issues relevant to Geography.
