DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY FACULTY - FOOD TECHNOLOGY

What happens in Year 7?

Food Technology is an enjoyable and exciting subject where you will do various types of practical work including investigations, tasting sessions and of course cooking.  You will do a selection of design projects which encourage healthy eating e.g. in fruits and vegetables you will taste a selection of unusual fruits and design and make a vegetable stir fry.

What happens in Year 10 and 11?

Food Technology is an option for GCSE.  You will continue to learn about many important subjects related to Food and the Food Industry.  By studying this GCSE you will gain valuable experiences, which will be useful to you when you leave school and set up your own home, as well as gaining a GCSE.  Projects include bread products, ready steady cook, main course meals and sweet baked products.  In Year 11 you will choose your own design project which gives you 60% of your GCSE grade.

How do we help you achieve your potential?

Food Technology is taught in a modern well equipped room, with a wide range of resources including access to ICT, and we have our own set of laptops.  In Design Technology we have developed a motivating assessment system that gives students immediate feedback of their progress.  We have a reward system, at the end of every project students are given effort and achievement awards, this actively encourages students.  This allows students to set targets for further improvement and enables students to be well aware of their performance and progression.

How can you help at home?

Encourage your child to keep up to date with all developments related to food by reading newspapers and watching healthy eating  TV programmes.  Allow your child to cook at home, especially by designing and trying out healthy new recipe ideas.
