ENGLISH

What happens in Year 7?

Our Year 7 programme will help you to build on your strengths in English.  We
begin with a topic on story-writing that will help you to set yourself clear targets
with regards to improving your writing.  Our independent reading programme will
help you to increase your reading age and class reading topics look at children’s
fiction, information texts and poetry.  You will be taught in your form group and will
have three one-hour lessons of English each week as well as one half hour lesson
allocated to Reading and Literacy.

What happens in Years 10 and 11?

GCSE English is all about making you an effective communicator - that’s why
you’ll continue to study English for three and a half hours a week until you leave
Westborough.  Everyone has the opportunity to be entered for GCSE English and
gain a grade C or better.  About 80% of students are entered for GCSE English
Literature too - an added bonus!

How do we help you achieve your potential?

All students study the same high quality of work - all students have the opportunity
to not only fulfil but EXCEED their potential.  Marking and assessment within the
department is thorough and easy-to-understand and we endeavour to make
lessons exciting and demanding to keep you on your toes.  Class and individual
targets are set and monitored and you will find your English teacher supportive
and interested in YOU.

How can you help at home?

Our feeder schools all testify to the valuable work parents do in listening to their
children read, looking at their children’s writing and taking an interest in the work
in hand.  Please do continue to encourage your child to read widely and ask them
regularly to talk about the work they are doing in English.  This will undoubtedly
help your child to enjoy English and see it as an important subject.  Most children
appreciate family help when it comes to learning spellings or tackling other
homeworks.  Please domake it your business to know what English homework
your child is set each week.
