FACULTY OF EXPRESSIVE ARTS - ART

What happens in Year 7?

Art is a subject which is extremely popular at Westborough High School.  A wide
range of work is covered in Year 7 starting with the basics of colour theory and
colour mixing.  A lot of time is also spent developing sketching skills and helping
students understand the basics of line, tone, form, shape etc.  With the basics
covered students have far more confidence in their own abilities and are far more
likely to experiment and work independently.

Work moves on to several theme based topics and students learn about different
artists whose work has had an impact in the world of art.  Students experiment
and experience a wide range of media and techniques including painting, drawing,
collage, oil and chalk pastels, card modelling etc.

What happens in Years 10 and 11?

Art is an option for GCSE.   GCSE Art and Design is made up of two parts which
together make up the GCSE grade.  It has four assessment objectives split into
two halves for marking.  Students follow the unendorsed GCSE Art and Design
course.  Unendorsed means that it is a general Art, Craft and Design course
where you experience a range of different activities.

How do we help you achieve your potential?

Art is taught in bright, well equipped rooms, with a wide range of resources
including access to ICT.  In Art we have developed a motivating assessment
system that gives students immediate feedback of their progress.  We have a
reward system, at the end of every project students are given effort and
achievement awards, this actively encourages students.  This allows students to
set targets for further improvement and enables students to be well aware of their
performance and progression.

How can you help at home?

Encourage your child to keep up to date with news related to Art e.g. TV
programmes.  Encourage them to draw/paint at home and also collect a wide
range of resources/information to help them with their work in art.

Who should I talk to if I want more information?

Mrs  C Walker – Art Teacher
Ms R Belli – Art Teacher
Ms N Butterworth – Art Teacher
