Mathematics (Core Subject)

Exam Board: Edexcel

Mathematics is a fascinating subject that helps us solve a lot of real life problems. All students at Westborough study Mathematics in Years 10 and 11. All students follow a course leading to GCSE. Although in many ways GCSE Maths is a continuation of the previous study of Maths there will be increased ICT, problem solving and coursework as you approach final exams.

Mathematics is essential for life after school – it helps with the study of many other subjects and it is an everyday life skill too.

As well as bringing a pen, pencil and ruler to every lessons, students that do the best have access to their own calculator. Students entered for the higher paper will need a scientific calculator.

Assessment

GCSE Mathematics is assessed by two exam papers (one non-calculator and one with calculator).

After the mock examinations in December of Year 11 students are entered for one of the two examination tiers.  This enables them to access the following grades:

  • Foundation Tier          Grades C to G
  • Higher  Tier                Grades A* to D
