WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
The course is for those of you who have an adventurous and enquiring approach to aspects of art and design – in particular photography.
WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE?
This exciting and imaginative course will help you develop a wide and varied understanding of past and contemporary imagery. You will develop practical skills to express your ideas, feelings and meanings. You will also develop an understanding of the materials, techniques, technology and processes used within the photographic industry.
The emphasis is on the process of developing ideas and practical creative work
- Darkroom skills and practices
- Materials, techniques and processes
- Camera technology and operations
- Studio and location photography
- The use of light and lenses
- Digital technology and media
You will be taught how to compose images, operate darkroom processes and print your own work. You will experience using a variety of cameras - Digital and SLR (single lens reflex) in varying formats. These are used appropriately for coursework assignments. You will also have the opportunity to access digital media facilities within the Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) in Digital Design at Dewsbury College.
HOW DO I GET ON THIS COURSE?
If you have an aptitude, a keen interest in the subject and/or are creative or imaginative, you may have the basic skills to succeed. You do not need to have studied art and design or photography.
Achievement at level 5 in your English, Maths and/or Science SATS. Aiming to achieve grade C at GCSE. A good report from your school including good attendance and punctuality.
WHAT WILL I ACHIEVE?
Successful completion of the course will give you a GCSE in Photography. The course can help you develop transferable skills that can take you in to any further study or career.
HOW WILL THE COURSE BE ASSESSED?
Your coursework and your work journals, which will include research, supporting studies and development of ideas leading to finished pieces of work. A written examination will also contribute towards your final submission.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTER THE COURSE?
There are many things you can go on to do with this GCSE – go on to do AS or A Level or a National Diploma course in this subject or a related art and design discipline. Students often specialise further with their photography qualification - either into further and higher education or into professional careers in design, architecture, photo journalism, advertising, marketing, studio photography, fashion, Film and Broadcasting companies, publishing and media.

All materials, equipment and facilities will be provided.
