BTEC First Certificate In Performing Arts Acting (Option Subject)

Exam Board: BTEC (if you choose this subject then you will not be able to choose Drama)

The BTEC First Certificate in Acting is an exciting new course which is being offered by the Expressive Arts Faculty.

The BTEC Certificate is a vocational course in acting.

The Performing Arts Acting course is ideal for those students who have an interest in learning more about how the drama business works. This course balances theory and practical work.

You are not required to go into as much depth as you would with a GCSE Drama course but you will study more breadth, having several units to complete.  Due to the strongly practical nature, we will expect you to put the time in both within lessons and in extra curricular work.

This course is suitable for students considering a career in the Arts or for those who take part in extra curricular performing arts work.  It is an excellent course which will develop your team building and confidence skills.  The BTEC course has more activities than the GCSE Drama course but will not go into as much depth.

The course requires students to study 1 core unit and 2 option units.

Core Units:

  • Acting

Some examples of the optional units are:

  • Understanding Drama
  • Devising plays

Typical activities include: devising a scene for a soap opera, performing a theatre piece such as John Goalber’s ‘Bouncers’.

Assessment

Assessment is via assignments and performance work. You will also develop key skills and acting techniques.  Coursework is continuous throughout the course, you will have to work hard and keep to deadlines.

The BTEC First Certificate in performing Arts is a SINGLE OPTION course that is the equivalent to TWO GCSEs at Grades A* to C. If you do not meet the requirements of a grade ‘C’ it is classed as a fail.
